During the summer of 2006 Leah (my fiancé) and I decided to take “Rusty” our campervan on a tour of Cornwall. During the week long tour visited Land’s End which ended up being very commercialised and a bit of an anti-climax. As we were driving back out, feeling a little deflated, Leah spotted some Tipis to the rear of an old hotel building and we stopped to investigate.

Whitesands Hotel run by Teri and Darren is a place where you can enjoy the good things in life. It was a pretty hot day and a drink was in order. We wandered round to the rear of the hotel and were greeted by Darren, who was actually on a day off and enjoying the summer sun with a Magners.

We ended up sitting on the lovely decking area with a great bottle of champagne and as the afternoon passed we got to know Darren and some of the other guests. During the afternoon Darren gave us a tour of the place. There is a great cosy restaurant, cool themed rooms, a great TV lounge and best of all the tipis out the back.

The tipis are pretty amazing and each one is decorated with its own unique feel. Our tipi had a fantastic king size metal bed and big soft duvet. Tonight was going to be fun…

By now we were pretty hungry and headed over the restaurant for some dinner, and we were in for a treat. The menu offers a wide range of the freshest locally caught seafood and the choicest cuts of meat from award winning local butchers. We had an excellent meal of some of the best fish I have ever had!

The dinner experience was pretty unusual as Teri and Darren miggled with the guests, getting to know everyone. This could have been an imposition but Teri and Darren are such great company so it was a pleasure….

We actually ended up pushing all the tables together in the restaurant and having a bit of a party!

Later on Darren disappeared to light our private bonfire next to our tipi to which Leah and I eventually retired with a nice single malt.

The next three days followed pretty much the same theme of excellent food, wine and company with a daily walk down onto the great beach at Sennen to enjoy the golden sands and nice little shops and galleries.

A notable highlight of the stay was when Darren prepared a special dinner for Leah and I. The fishmonger had come in with his daily delivery and Darren spotted a small cod (ideal for a meal for two). After a great breakfast he took me aside and asked if we would like this for dinner. I obviously agreed and the bespoke dinner was amazing. In fact everyone else in the restaurant looked on with envy as it was served to our table!

The Whitsands Hotel has an energy that is difficult to explain, perhaps it is Teri and Darren, perhaps the fact that the ley lines cross here (actually exactly where our tipi was!).

It is difficult to express the amazing time that we had here and I could actually write for hours recounting Darren’s stories about his time with the Maasai tribe or about the late nights spent with the other guests hearing mystical stories about ancient earth however I hope that this post inspires a visit…
